# Section views

Sections cut through the layout so you can show equipment heights and clearances on a cut plane.
Plant Room Studio has two related tools.

## 2D section lines

Use the **Section** ribbon verb to draw a **section line** across the plan. Each section line
defines a cut and its viewing direction and generates a **section view** of the layout along that
line — useful for showing equipment elevations and vertical clearances.

Section geometry is included when you **export to DXF**, so your section marks and cuts carry
through to CAD. See [Exporting](/tools/plant-room-studio/docs/exporting).

## 3D section planes

In the [3D view](/tools/plant-room-studio/docs/working-in-3d) you can enable a **section plane**
to slice the model interactively — drag its offset to move the cut through the room, or add custom
planes. This is a live viewing aid in 3D rather than a drawn section on the plan.

Use 2D section lines for documentation you'll export, and 3D section planes for on-screen
inspection.
